Relationships between mothers and daughters can often be strained, difficult, and sometimes unloving. That is what I was trying to depict while painting 'Dearest'. An unemotional mother looks straight into the distance without maternal feeling or compassion, while the young daughter looks directly at her mother with an all knowing quizzical and distrusting stare.
This Victorian elements of this painting are intentional, however I set the figures against an Art Deco geometric curvilinear background meant to convey silent seething turmoil. The geometric lines and shapes within the ruffles, apparel and hair, as well as the limited color palette are true to the Art Deco style.
